Quantum Skills Shortages

the United Nations has named 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.  Employers in the emerging quantum industry struggle to find design and development engineers, engineering technicians, photonics technicians, production and process engineers among many other roles, according to the Government's Unit for Future Skills.

The UK needs to increase the numbers of people skilled in technologies supporting Quantum.

A strong Quantum industry is emerging in the UK.  The country is in the World's top three for creating Quantum companies.

The opportunities for technology-literate young people to have rewarding, interesting careers in the Quantum industry are huge.

Now that Quantum is beginning to be commercialised, there is a rapidly growing need for those with the skills to work in the industry, as well as in pure research.

Organisations such as at IBM are starting to offer Quantum apprenticeships.

If you are involved in a Quantum company and are interested in finding out more about how to engage with a school, do get in touch.

Quantum presents career opportunities such as: photonics, lasers, computer hardware, electrical engineering, laboratory technician, software development, cryptography, mechanical engineering, optical engineering. Industry estimates that half of these roles will not need a degree.

Applications of Quantum include:

  • early disease diagnosis
  • seeing gas leaks and hidden objects
  • the creation of a ‘quantum internet’
  • quantum computing
  • position, navigation and timing systems
